This book aims to provide a unified methodology to derive models for fatigue life prediction. This includes S-N, e-N and crack propagation models. This book is unique in that it contemplates the three main fatigue approaches (stress-based, strain-based and fracture mechanics) from a novel and integrated point of view. As an alternative to the preferential attention paid to deterministic models based on the physical, phenomenological and empirical description of fatigue, their probabilistic nature is emphasized in this book, in which stochastic fatigue and crack growth models are presented. After an introductory chapter in which an overview of the book is provided, the following chapters are devoted to derive models for the S-N fields for fixed and varying stress level, the e-N fields, the relations between the two, and an analysis of the size effect in fatigue problems. Next, crack grow models are derived based on fracture mechanics, statistical and common sense considerations, which lead to functional equations providing non-arbitrary models. Two different approaches are given, leading to two classes of models, the intersection class of which is derived through compatibility analysis. Then the compatibility of the S-N curves model and the crack growth model, which are two aspects of the same fatigue problem, are used to obtain a model which allows both approaches to be connected. Finally, the problem of selection damage measures is analyzed, and some damage measures are proposed as the most convenient, including the probability of failure and a normalized measure related to the percentile curve. This leads to very simple and useful damage accumulation models, which are illustrated with some examples. The book ends with an appendix with a short description of some classical and some more recent fatigue models of those existing in the literature.

Thin film deposition is the most ubiquitous and critical of the processes used to manufacture high tech devices. Morphology and microstructure of thin films directly controls their optical, magnetic, and electrical properties. This book focuses on modeling and simulations used in research on the morphological evolution during film growth. The authors emphasize the detailed mathematical formulation of the problem both through numerical calculations based on Langevin continuum equations, and through Monte Carlo simulations based on discrete surface growth models when an analytical formulism is not convenient. Evolution of Thin-Film Morphology will be of benefit to university researchers and industrial scientists working in the areas of semiconductor processing, optical coating, plasma etching, patterning, micro-machining, polishing, tribology, and any discipline that requires an understanding of thin film growth processes. In particular, the reader will be introduced to the mathematical tools that are available to describe such a complex problem, and appreciate the utility of the various modeling methods through numerous example discussions. For beginners in the field, the text is written assuming a minimal background in mathematics and computer programming. The book will enable readers themselves to set up a computational program to investigate specific topics of interest in thin film deposition.

Larry Pratt received his Ph. D. in physical oceanography in the Woods Hole/MIT Joint Program in 1982. He then served as a research associate and assistant research professor at the University of Rhode Island before joining the scientific staff at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where he is now a senior scientist. He is editor of The Physical Oceanography of Sea Straits and has authored or co-authored numerous articles on hydraulic effects in the ocean. J. A. (Jack) Whitehead received his Ph. D. in engineering and applied science from Yale University in 1968. After postdoctoral work and serving as assistant research geophysicist at the Institute of Geophysical and Planetary Physics at UCLA, he joined the scientific staff at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where he is now a Senior Scientist. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles on hydraulic effects in the ocean. Hydraulic effects can occur when high-speed ocean currents and atmospheric winds encounter strong topographic features. This book contains a deep and extensive discussion of geophysical flows that are broad enough to be influenced by Earth's rotation and strong enough to experience classical hydraulic effects such as critical control and hydraulic jumps. Examples include deep overflows and coastal currents in the ocean and winds in the coastal marine layer. The material is appropriate for students at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level who have some elementary knowledge of fluid mechanics. Reviews of geophysical observations and of the hydraulics of flow with no background rotation are followed by chapters on models of currents in rotating channels, shock waves and time dependence, coastal flow, two-layer stratification, and jets. Although the primary focus is on the theory, a number of case studies, including the Faroe Bank overflow and the California coastal marine layer winds, are presented along with numerous laboratory experiments. Exercises are presented at the end of most sections. The presentation should allow the reader to develop a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the hydraulics of rotating flows.

Modern business cycle theory and growth theory uses stochastic dynamic general equilibrium models. In order to solve these models, economists need to use many mathematical tools. This book presents various methods in order to compute the dynamics of general equilibrium models. In part I, the representative-agent stochastic growth model is solved with the help of value function iteration, linear and linear quadratic approximation methods, parameterised expectations and projection methods. In order to apply these methods, fundamentals from numerical analysis are reviewed in detail. In part II, the authors discuss methods in order to solve heterogeneous-agent economies. This part of the book also serves as an introduction to the modern theory of distribution economics. Applications include the dynamics of the income distribution over the business cycle or the demographic transition in a large-scale overlapping generations model. In an accompanying home page to this book, computer codes to all applications can be downloaded. "This is perhaps the perfect book to learn how to solve quantitative macroeconomics models. Its balance between theory, choice of models, computational insights and use of examples make it an excellent teaching tool. One of the very few books a professional macroeconomist should have: I always learn something important when I consult it." José-Víctor Ríos Rull, University of Minnesota "This book not only does an excellent job in explaining the existing tools, but it also teaches the reader on how to write her/his own programs and it provides the reader with the tools to help advance the state of the art of dynamic macroeconomics. " Wouter J. Den Haan, University of Amsterdam "This is an excellent book for economists who do quantitative research. It will be an invaluable teaching tool for graduate macroeconomic courses." Ayse Imrohoroglu, University of Southern California " ¦ provides the reader with exactly the necessary computational tools to solve the dynamic general equilibrium models macroeconomists care about. It is therefore the perfect complement to Stokey, Lucas and Prescott's and Sargent and Ljungqvist's theoretical treatment of modern macroeconomics." Dirk Krueger, University of Pennsylvania

This book presents biosensor development and modeling from both a chemical and a mathematical point of view. It contains unique modeling methods for catalytical (amperometric, potentiometer and optical) biosensors. It examines processes that occur in the sensors' layers and at their interface, and it provides analytical and numerical methods to solve enzymatic kinetic and diffusion equations. The action of single enzyme as well as polyenzyme biosensors is studied, and the modeling of biosensors that contain perforated membranes and multipart mass transport profiles is critically investigated. Furthermore, it is fully described how signals can be biochemically amplified, how cascades of enzymatic substrate conversion are triggered, and how signals are processed via a chemometric approach and artificial neuronal networks. The results of digital modeling are compared with both proximal analytical solutions and experimental data.
